Hydrogen Electrolysis Explained Simply – Sustainable Energy from Water

Hydrogen electrolysis is a process in which water (H₂O) is split into its components, hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂), using electrical current. When the electricity comes from renewable sources like solar or wind, green hydrogen is produced – a CO₂-free and sustainable energy source.

How electrolysis works:

  1. Water is supplied and separated in the electrolysis cell by an electric voltage.

  2. Oxygen is produced at the anode and released as a byproduct.

  3. Pure hydrogen is produced at the cathode and stored.

This is how solar energy is used efficiently

Step 1: Charging / Storage

The conversion of solar energy into usable energy takes place in several steps to ensure a sustainable and independent supply of electricity and heat:

  1. Photovoltaics convert sunlight into electricity – Solar panels generate electrical energy from sunlight.

  2. Direct use in the building – The produced electricity is used for household appliances, lighting, or industrial applications.

  3. Storage in battery storage – Excess electricity is first stored in a battery to be available when needed.

  4. Conversion into hydrogen – When the battery storage is full, excess energy is used with an electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen from water.

  5. Storage in hydrogen tanks – The produced hydrogen is safely stored in special tanks and is ready for later use.

  6. Flexible use of waste heat – The waste heat generated during the electrolysis process can optionally be used for hot water and heating in the building.

Step 2: Discharging / Use

The green hydrogen stored in hydrogen tanks can be flexibly and sustainably used for electricity, heat, and mobility. Thanks to this technology, excess solar power can be efficiently stored and accessed at any time.

  1. Electricity generation through fuel cells – The stored hydrogen is converted back into electrical energy in a fuel cell. This allows the building to be supplied with clean, CO₂-free electricity at all times – even at night or during low sunlight conditions.

  2. Heat supply & hot water – The electricity generation in the fuel cell produces waste heat, which can be directly used for heating and hot water preparation. Hydrogen can also be used in modified gas condensing boilers, which burn it like natural gas to provide heat for radiators and hot water. Due to its clean combustion, only water vapor is produced. This makes the building's energy supply even more efficient and environmentally friendly.

  3. Hydrogen for mobility – Alternatively, the hydrogen can be used for hydrogen vehicles – an ideal solution for households or businesses with their own hydrogen-powered vehicles.
